Who can join MYAC?
MYAC is a Mississauga youth organization; therefore, you must be between the ages
of 14 and 24 and be a resident of or attend school in Mississauga. To join, simply come to one of our meetings and we will sign you up.
When and where does MYAC meet?
MYAC meetings take place at 6:45PM on the second Wednesday of every month at Mississauga City Hall, located at 300 City Center Drive. Click here to find out when and where our next meeting is.
What happens at the monthly meeting?
The chairperson will call the meeting to order and welcome all members. Following an icebreaker, the committee may discuss ongoing MYAC projects (such as an upcoming event or conference) and present volunteer opportunities to members. Afterwards, an issue is presented and discussed - the group may do one big discussion, or break out into smaller groups to tackle the same or different topics.
Can I count this towards my 40 hours of community involvement needed to complete my high school requirements?
Attending only the meetings will not count towards the volunteer time - however, as MYAC provides many opportunities to volunteer and help out at fun and exciting events, members can sign up to help and will be given volunteer hours for their time.
Is there a membership fee?
All it costs is dedication and commitment to the organization!
What happens if I miss a meeting?
If you are going to miss a meeting, be sure to send your regrets to the Director of Membership Affairs. Should you miss three meetings in a row without notifying us, you will be removed from MYAC membership records.
What do I get out of being a MYAC member?
By joining MYAC, you get many opportunities to give back to the community and promote youth involvement within the city. You are able to contribute youth input on city issues and be well informed on issues affecting people your age.
How much work do I have to put in if I am a member?
It is solely up to the general
member on how much work and commitment they would like to put into this
committee. Aside from the general meetings, other meetings occur to organize
specific projects or deal with particular issues. It is important to remember
that the greater the amount of effort and work put in, the greater the rewards
and successes!
When do elections for the
Executive occur?
The elections
happen at the Annual General Meeting in October. Along with the elections, the
purpose of this meeting is to highlight the achievements of the past 12 months.
Does MYAC run any of its own events?
Yes! Past events include the “If I Were Mayor of Mississauga” essay contest, the annual Senior-Youth Festival, ‘Road Rush: Ride the Bus!’ and the Mississauga Youth Achievement Awards.
